Your chance
to own a piece of audio history!
Tandberg
earned a reputation for building rock-solid, super high-performance stereo
receivers & other components in the late 1970's. These fine audio
components were hand-assembled in Norway, and among other things their tuners
had sensitivity and noise rejection capabilities equal to some of the finest
component tuners made. They had a beautiful sonic quality and were built to
last a lifetime.
However,
Tandberg ran into financial distress by the end of the decade and was
reorganized as a much smaller company. The old wood cabinet products were sold
out completely to finance the new operation, which then launched the 3000
series. Among those more modern, brushed-anodized aluminum models, the TPT
series of programmable tuners were standouts with the 3001A in particular
ranking among the finest component tuners ever produced even today.
This 3031A
programmable tuner was offered during the later period of the 3000-series era.
It combines the FM performance Tandberg was known for with the functionality of
a fully digital tuner. The tuner offers 16 preset switches, digital display,
and remote control operation with optional remote (remote not included in this
listing).
There are
front panel switches for setting and accessing the presets, tuning up or down
(manual or auto modes) mono/stereo, and mute. Preset tuning information is
shown on a small 2-digit LED display on the left hand side, and the larger
center display provides the channel frequency, with three LED's to the left of
that indicating stereo operation, center tuning, and signal strength. The small
window on the right hand side is the IR remote sensor.
On the rear
panel you will find a pair of nickel-plated RCA output jacks along with a 75
ohm PAL antenna jack. Unlike earlier 3000-series components with the IEC 2-pin
power socket and detachable power cables, this one has the cable attached
permanently, passing through the rear panel via strain-relief bushing. The line
plug is 2-pin US type, non-polarized. The tuner can be converted for 220V/240V
operation by moving wires on the transformer, which is very easy to access. A
label with detailed diagram showing the 220V/240V wiring changes is attached to
the inside of the tuner chassis.
The
operation of this tuner is flawless as you would expect from a Tandberg. All of
the functions work as they should. As far as performance, it's very good if not
quite as spectacular as the 3011A and 3001A. It probably doesn't have the
phenomenal sensitivity of those models, but does pull all of my local stations
in good stereo and it also pulled in a couple of LA stations albeit with a bit
of noise. It also sounds pretty good to me. I like the fact that it matches the
popular 3015A CD player cosmetically, with round metal switches finished in the
same gun-metal gray. The matching 3032A integrated amp or 3038A preamp also
have that same cosmetic treatment, as do many later production 3000-series
models.
Although it's
not the best example of the 3031A I've run across, the cosmetic condition of this
tuner is very good, with a few exceptions. There are a couple of obvious
scratches on the top cover, and some nicks and scuffs on the front panel. From
a few feet away, all of that is pretty much invisible. Overall this tuner presents
well and will be an asset to your stereo rack. The original manual is in
similar used but decent condition.
Unlike
Tandberg's earlier analog tuner models, the 3031A has no leaky storage battery,
uses much more reliable preset switches, and has no dial lamps to fail over time.
So, if you have been looking for a Tandberg tuner but were put off by those
known issues with parts failure etc., this is a great opportunity to pick up an
exceptional example of the last tuner model they made in the 3000-series.
Supplied with: comes with original operating manual as shown. No
other accessories supplied, sorry. You will need an RCA cable and a PAL to F-connector
adapter to use the tuner with most 75 ohm antennas. The PAL adapter is generally
available here on , or at Radio Shack.

Buyers,
please note my shipping practices as follows:
This auction is set up to reflect actual
shipping costs, with no handling charges. I make every effort to find and use
the lowest cost mailing method appropriate for your item, and refund
surplus shipping paid whenever possible. Please remember that selecting the lowest
cost shipping methods also usually results in the slowest
delivery - please do not leave low detailed seller ratings because
of this fact! If you need the item faster, Priority Mail or Express Mail
are better choices. Please contact me if the shipping
method you want is not offered in the listing. If that service is
available for the particular item, I will revise & resend the invoice.
In the case of larger items shipped
overseas, USPS Priority is currently the lowest cost service available.
DHL & UPS are much, much higher. I will use First Class Mail
International where possible but it has a weight cut-off of 4 lbs. There
is no longer a surface shipment option, as USPS eliminated Surface Parcel
Post last year. I use recycled packaging materials
when I can, because I believe it is the environmentally sound thing to do.
I also use new USPS Priority &
other packaging materials to supplement the recycled materials where
appropriate. I'm always very careful to make sure
the item being shipped is properly protected regardless of the type of
packing materials used.
Please keep
the above in mind when you leave feedback. If you feel you cannot leave 5
star Detailed Seller Ratings for any reason, please contact me so I can
resolve whatever issue you may have. Thank you for viewing my listing!
