Very Large Navajo Sand Painting Signed by Jackson Chee, 1970
Uncommonly large, vintage Navajo Indian sand painting signed by the artist - Jackson Chee - in 1970. The Navajo are the most acclaimed of the Native American tribes who practiced the art of sand painting. These works were originally used in healing ceremonies, with the symmetry of the work symbolizing the restoration of harmony in the subject's life. This is a wonderful example of the larger, more rare paintings from this period.
The notes affixed to the back display the same message, and read as follows:
"Chiracahua 'Sun Burst.' Center shield - symbol of the sun; Buffalo horns - symbol of strength; Eagle feathers at their tips stand for solace (sp) and justice; Sands are all natural color rocks ground. Jackson Chee (Navajo) 1970."
There is also a stamp on the rear of the frame, displaying the name of the shop in Tyrone, NM where the painting was professionally framed.
Provenance: Private Collection, Texas; Auction.
Dimensions (inches): 26.75" x 26.75"
Weight: 14 lbs. (approx.)

This item will be professionally packed due to its size and delicate condition. The flat rate shipping quote is an educated guess and assumes that the buyer will reside as far away from Texas (in the United States) as possible. We do not have an exact packing quote available, so we err on the side of caution. Obviously this could lead to overcharging shipping & packing fees. Buyers have two choices:
(1) For convenience, pay the listed flat rate shipping and packing fee immediately upon the end of the auction. Once packing and shipping amounts are calculated, if we overcharged you, we will refund that difference via PayPal (*in the event that we undercharge on the flat fee, we will assume the difference); OR
(2) If you would prefer a precise packing and shipping quote, do not pay the invoice at auction's end; rather send us a message requesting that we postpone the invoice until we have an exact shipping figure. Please keep in mind that this will delay the transaction a few days while we wait for our packer to provide his estimate.
We apologize for the confusing shipping policy and procedures, but our experience is that there is no perfect solution to shipping antique and vintage goods. In a Buy-It-Now format, we can build estimates into the price, but unfortunately, that is not possible for auction-style listings.
*Due to the size of this item, we are unable to ship internationally.
Generally, we will accept returns, although each return is at our discretion and the buyer must have our written approval before proceeding with a return. Buyers should communicate their desire to explore a return within fourteen (14) days of the close of auction. Please understand that even if a return is permitted, a buyer will not be refunded the original cost or shipping or the return postage. Items must be received in the same condition in which they were originally shipped.
